No More Negative Self Talk!

Negative self talk pertains to all those unwanted, intrusive negative thoughts that wander through one’s mind almost every second of every day.

Their presence serves to distract, derail, defocus you and drain a great deal of your vital life energy, to name a few.

Many strategies have been proposed for ending the negative self talk i.e. Rational Emotive Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Hypnotherapy, NLP etc.

In my view these therapies only work for a short time, or at least for as long as one is using them. Of course to keep employing a form of therapy to keep such intrusive thoughts at bay “is a job” in itself. This means that it “takes” energy as well, your energy!

What’s more after one stops employing such therapies, after a while the intrusive thoughts re-emerge again. I know this both from first hand experience and from the experience of clients I treated when I was a psychiatrist.

I’ve learned that the reason these therapies “don’t’ work is because they miss the root of the problem. That is that these intrusive thoughts are generated by false unconscious beliefs we carry deep inside of us as a result of conditioned life experience.

These unconscious beliefs act to “justify” the reasons why the negative self talk is useful for you to have. Of course when you are “unconscious” of these justifications you cannot see how “preposterous” their logic is.

It is this very reason that they have the power over you that they do. It’s only when you become conscious, i.e. see their wierd logic that they become exposed and you can become free of them once and for all. Yes permanently and with no further work required on your part!

Unless these beliefs are unearthed and released from one’s mind/body they will continue to generate intrusive negative thoughts.

Meditation The Power that Lifts

The most striking benefits of meditation are found in reports from ‘Pit Burial’ studies. Highly regarded Yogis of India have performed superhuman feats. These feats have been recorded and scientifically monitored.
One such feat is to be buried alive for one or more days.

A classical case in exhibition of this power is that of Saint Haridas of 19th century.

The book ‘Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines’ narrate the incident.
Saint Haridas was buried for four months and afterwards disinterred living, under the careful supervision of the Maharaja of Lahore, Ranjit singh and Sir Claude Wade, the British General. Over the gave of the saint, who lay therein in a chest sealed by the Maharaja with the royal seal, barley-seed was sown and grew up in a place enclosed by a wall and guarded incessantly by armed sentinels. On the date of the interment the Yogi’s face had been shaven clean and when he was disinterred after the expiry of four months, his face was as smooth as on the day of his burial.
In 1986 Army Research Institute commissioned a review of the literature on meditation by Brener and Connally of the University of Hull in England.
Brener and Connally concluded that reported feats of endurance such as pit burials are likely to be due to the effect of meditation or deep relaxation on metabolism. A lowered metabolism may allow for survival under conditions of restricted oxygen availability. Effects on metabolism can be produced by controlling respiration in the manner practiced by yogis.

Rising up and floating in air known as levitation is one of the powers that a Yogi practicing Pranayama (control of breath) is said to acquire.
In a paper read at the International Psychical Congress held in Paris in 1927, Professor Von Schrenck Notzing, Professor of Psychology, University of Munich, described the case of a young man, who demonstrated this power of levitation acquired through yogic practice of breath control no less than 27 times!

More and more scientific experiments are being carried out to find out the benefits of Yoga.

Continuous practice of Meditation bestows mind power. It has been proved by yogis that the power acquired thus could lift them up both mentally and physically!

Mindfulness and Independence Observing Fireworks

“It’s a free country,” they say. “Celebrate our independence,” I hear.

Well, I’m all for having a party, but it strikes me that you don’t have to be an American to appreciate freedom, and doing what I’m told isn’t the best way to exercise independence.

So, let’s expand that notion of freedom just a bit, and look at how we can become more aware of the fireworks that are lighting up our minds.

What sets off your mental fireworks? What ignites your personal bottle rockets?

Perhaps it’s a simple pet peeve, like small handbag dogs, or Jello salad, or people who talk on their cell phones too loudly. Maybe you go ballistic when you hear a certain song. We often have extreme reactions to relatively minor things based on our own little stories about them.

Maybe you save your fireworks for the big-ticket itemsissues like war, poverty, health, and education.

In your head or in the sky above, when those fireworks start exploding, you’ve got two choices. You can either:

1) Hoot/holler, ooh/ahh, whistle/clap

-or-

2) Watch quietly

What do YOU do?

How do you respond when that initial flash appears? Do you get caught up in the excitement of it? Are you likely to share your enthusiasm in a way that is noisyor are you more likely to watch in silence? What is your NATURAL TENDENCY?

In the name of freedom everywhere, I’d like to offer this tip to those who may be convinced that mindfulness requires silence: try making noise. And to those who are more likely to hoot and holler, here’s a suggestion: be quiet.

In other words, use fireworks as an opportunity to free yourself from your typical response pattern, and pay attention to the newness of it. After all, mindfulness starts when we notice something new. So, instead of focusing on always finding something to get excited about, try tweaking your own way of reacting. And then, watch THAT.

Start with the big, glorious displays in the night sky. Observe. Watch yourself. Do what you normally wouldn’t do.

Later, try the same thing with those mental fireworks. Observe. Watch yourself. Do what you normally wouldn’t do.

And celebrate your independence.
